MOQ is not just one factory number. It is the result of product format, fragrance variants, components, decoration, packaging, testing and the way your range is divided into individual SKUs.
The short answer
A home-fragrance MOQ is the smallest quantity that can be manufactured commercially for an agreed specification. Ask whether the figure applies per product, per fragrance, per vessel, per pack design or across the complete order. That distinction can change the real launch commitment dramatically.
What is an MOQ?
MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. Manufacturers and component suppliers use it because every production run requires setup, planning, material purchasing, quality checks and administration. Below a certain volume, the work and material commitments may not be commercially practical.
There may be several overlapping minimums in one project. Your finished-product manufacturer might support a relatively modest run, while a custom carton, decorated bottle or specialist pump supplier requires a larger commitment.
The six factors that commonly determine MOQ
1. Product format
Candles, reed diffusers, wax melts and room sprays use different materials, filling processes, components and testing routes.
2. Number of SKUs
Every fragrance, size, vessel colour or pack variation may create a separate stock-keeping unit and production setup.
3. Components
Vessels, lids, reeds, pumps and closures often arrive in supplier pack sizes or have their own purchasing minimums.
4. Decoration
Custom colours, printing, labels and finishes can introduce setup charges and minimum production batches.
5. Packaging
Stock packaging can be more flexible; custom printed cartons or inserts may require larger print runs.
6. Testing and compliance
Development, performance checks, documentation and artwork review carry costs regardless of the final batch size.
Total MOQ versus MOQ per SKU
Suppose a proposed launch contains four fragrances. A quotation for 400 units could mean 400 units in total, or 400 units of each fragrance—1,600 finished products. It could also mean 400 per vessel colour or per packaging design.
Request a simple written breakdown showing product format, fragrance, size, components, packaging version and quantity. This prevents a headline MOQ from hiding a much larger total inventory commitment.

Why lower MOQs can have a higher unit cost
Setup, sampling, testing, artwork handling and production planning do not disappear when the batch is smaller. With fewer finished units, those costs are spread across less stock. Small component purchases can also have less favourable pricing.
The lowest unit cost is not automatically the safest decision. Excess stock ties up cash, takes storage space and carries the risk of slow-selling fragrances or dated packaging. Compare the value of a lower unit cost with the cost of holding inventory.

- Share a realistic sales forecast and ask the manufacturer to identify the largest MOQ drivers.
